Artist Statement

“I feel there is something unexplored about woman that only a woman can explore.” – Georgia O’Keeffe

On Nov. 9, 2016, I set out to chronicle this feminist moment. This show is a snapshot of the progress I’ve made towards that goal. I reached backwards and found my own roots through older works, but I also studied the present and shared stories beyond my own.

The collection covers four different channels I observed:

1. Older works. This show puts pieces I created in college in a new context. They aren’t completely devoid of feminism. Women are still heroes, but they are simpler and unburdened.
2. Marches. United by neon pink, these pieces illustrate the Women’s March that took place worldwide on Jan. 21, 2017.
3. Fertility. Reproduction is intrinsically tied to feminism. In these pieces, I explored women in all their reproductive power: why this power deserves respect and sensitivity and how it can be devalued.
4. Feminist themes. I wanted to imagine a glass ceiling. Perhaps if we can picture it, we can dismantle it.

Many thanks to the women who contributed to this show. I needed ideas, raw materials, models and input and you helped me. Whether you knew it or not, we were creating something together. It made a big difference to me.
